First wave of COVID-19 hospital admissions in Denmark: a Nationwide population-based cohort study

Abstract Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its associated disease 2019 (COVID-19), is a worldwide emergency. Demographic, comorbidity laboratory determinants of death ICU admission were explored in all Danish hospitalised patients. Methods National health registries used to identify hospitalized patients with COVID-19 diagnosis. We obtained demographics, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), results on prognostic factors for using multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression competing risk survival analysis. Results Among 2431 between February 27 July 8 (median age 69 years [IQR 53–80], 54.1% males), 359 (14.8%) needed an intensive care unit (ICU) 455 (18.7%) died within 30 days follow-up. The seven-day cumulative incidence was lower females (7.9%) than males (16.7%), ( p < 0.001). Age, high CCI, elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin, D-dimer, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), urea, creatinine, lymphopenia, neutrophilia thrombocytopenia ±24-h independently the first week Conditional upon surviving week, male sex, age, CRP, LDH, urea neutrophil count days. Males presented more pronounced abnormalities admission. Conclusions Advanced comorbidity, higher levels systemic inflammation cell-turnover independent mortality. Age strongest predictor death, moderate level nearly two-fold increase Mortality significantly after week.
